Grey is a hydrologist who uses machine learning (advanced artificial intelligence) to get a better sense of where water is currently located on the Earth’s surface, and where it will be located in the future. Hydrologists monitor water around the world, create models to replicate the data they collect, and then use those models to make predictions about future events such as where flooding will occur. Grey has camped “in the middle of nowhere in Australia” where he tested soil moisture for the SMAP Cal/Val program. Grey recommends high school students learn how to write computer code and manage a GitHub repository (social media for computer programmers). A great beginning computer code for students to try is Python, and there are several online courses to help students get started. Grey also encourages students to maintain a strong foundation in mathematics.
