Superheroes of Science

Dec 16, 2019

Professor Robin Tanamachi studies severe storms using radar. In this episode, Robin discusses both the facts and fiction behind the movie Twister. She shares the career path that has led her to become a scientist studying convective storms and tornadoes. As a high school student, Robin took advantage of programs that allowed her to earn college credits.  Professor Tanamachi lived in Japan for a few months researching typhoons during grad school. She recommends getting outside of your comfort zone to help yourself grow. A children's book about her field research, The Tornado Scientist: Seeing Inside Severe Storms, written by Mary Kay Carson, was released earlier this year (2019).
